Abstract

This article traces the interplay of three distinct models of cannibalism in the Brazilian avant-garde movement Antropofagia: communion, counter-conquest, and collage. Strategically resignified depending on the rhetorical situation at hand, cannibalism provides a versatile—and at first glance seamless—trope that could negotiate the contradictory demands São Paulo intellectuals faced in the late 1920s. After looking at the early manifestations of these models of incorporation in the Semana de Arte Moderna (1922), the “Manifesto da Poesia Pau-Brasil” (1924), and Pau-Brasil (1925), I examine a diverse range of materials from the two “dentições” of the Revista de Antropofagia to trace their conflicts and collusions. I argue that attending to the multilayered plurality behind cannibalism allows us not only to revisit the long scholarly tradition on Antropofagia but also to explain the continuing appeal of the cannibal trope for contemporary Brazilian authors and artists.
