A Retentive Lagrangian: Variational Foundations of Self-Maintaining Difference
This paper introduces a variational formulation of retentive stability in complex systems. Building upon previously established operational thresholds and formal theorems of retentive nucleation, we construct a minimal retentive Lagrangian that characterizes self-maintaining difference as an architectural, post-dynamical regime. Retention is formalized not as sustained dynamics, equilibrium, or stored memory, but as a stationary configuration of structured difference persisting after the withdrawal of active driving processes. The variational framework explains the emergence of critical thresholds governing retentive nucleation and provides a unifying foundation linking empirical observables, formal theorems, and architectural invariance. The results establish retention as a substrate-independent property of configuration space and prepare the ground for subsequent topological, field-theoretic, and cosmological extensions within the ψ-Architecture research program.
