Securitization of Assets in the Renewable Energy Sector: Cases and Implications
Renewable energy infrastructure assets, such as wind farms and solar power plants, require significant capital investment but, in the long run, provide stable, predictable cash flow. Asset-backed securities have emerged as promising financing tools for renewable energy projects, enabling developers and investors to access new capital while reducing risk and increasing liquidity. This paper explores the potential benefits and challenges of issuing such structured securities for new energy infrastructure, providing insights into key drivers, structures and trends shaping the market. The methodology is a case study that compares the Japanese Infrastructure Fund approach and the Chinese Real Estate Investment Trust approach, exploring their backgrounds, processes and insights. I find that the key to successful renewable energy projects lies in a mature risk assessment system, a comprehensive credit rating mechanism, and targeted policy support. I finally extracted relevant policy recommendations and outlined possible future research directions, providing theoretical support and practical insights for further exploration.
