Managing stigma of having hemorrhoids: a computational qualitative analysis of the r/hemorrhoid subreddit
Online communication often serves as the primary outlet for individuals with hemorrhoids to share experiences, seek advice, and receive social support due to the stigmatized nature of these health conditions. Using stigma management communication theory, this study conducted an analysis via Leximancer to investigate how participants in r/hemorrhoid discussed their health condition while managing stigma. Three stigma management communication strategies — displaying, refocusing, and bonding — prevailed across five identified thematic clusters: (1) symptom disclosures, (2) adaptation, (3) assessment, (4) social dynamics, and (5) sexual and reproductive health. Findings from this study can extend our understanding of stigma management communication, disclosure, recovery, and supportive communication. These insights can inform health campaigns and healthcare providers to increase awareness, improve access to accurate information, and destigmatize discussions surrounding hemorrhoids.
