The Wheel: Potential for one of the Biggest Mistakes in the History of Mechanical Engineering
This paper presents a critical revision of one of the most iconic simple machines in history: the wheel. Through the systematic application of the Minimal Mass/Maximum Action Axiom, it is demonstrated that the traditional classification of the wheel as a fundamental simple machine possibly represents one of the greatest taxonomic errors in classical engineering. Quantitative and functional analysis reveals that the wheel lacks mechanical autonomy, functioning strictly as a Peripheral Axle Optimizer. While the axle (minimal mass) holds the primacy of action and the center of rotation, the wheel acts only to reduce friction and amplify displacement efficiency. Without the axle, the wheel becomes an inert object; conversely, the axle maintains independent functionality as a roller. This work proposes the formal reclassification of the wheel, correcting a value inversion that has persisted since antiquity and restoring functional primacy to the axle.
