Root canal morphology of permanent mandibular incisors of Saudi subpopulation in Al-Baha region: A cone-beam computed tomography study

Introduction: A proper understanding of root canal morphology and its deviations is essential for improving the outcomes of endodontic procedures. Therefore, the current study aims to explore the root canal morphology of permanent mandibular central and lateral incisors among subpopulation of the Al-Baha region, thereby ensuring accurate assessment of morphological variations. Materials and Methods: A total of 200 mandibular permanent incisors, comprising 97 permanent mandibular central incisors and 103 lateral incisors from the Al Baha subpopulation, were evaluated independently by three calibrated examiners via cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) wide field of view images using iCAT® software. For each tooth, the number of roots, root canal configuration at the cross-sectional level, and Vertucci’s root canal classification were recorded and analyzed. Results: All mandibular incisors examined in this study were single rooted. The most prevalent root canal configuration was type I (68.5%), followed by type III (25%). The majority of root canals exhibited an oval cross-sectional shape in the cervical (71%) and middle thirds (37%) of the root, whereas the apical third predominantly demonstrated a circular configuration (38%). Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences between the root canal morphology of mandibular central and lateral incisors. Conclusion: All examined mandibular incisors are single rooted. Vertucci’s root canal types I and III were the most predominant canal types in the mandibular incisors.
