Overall evaluation of cases of placenta previa
Background and aim The frequency of placenta previa is 0.28–1.5%. In contrast to the general population, placenta previa increases the risk of second-trimester hemorrhage and poor maternal and fetal outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate cases of placenta previa with the detection of feto-maternal outcomes. Patients and methods Fifty pregnant women who attended the hospital for evaluation of placenta previa were included in the study. Laboratory investigations included complete blood count, liver, and renal function tests. Ultrasound examination included fetal position, heart rate, placental position, placental abnormalities, and any congenital abnormalities. The clinical features and obstetric risk factors were evaluated. Maternal complications assessed included second-trimester hemorrhage, preterm labor, cesarean section, placental accreta, placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage, hysterectomy, and maternal sepsis. The maternal and fetal outcomes were evaluated: preterm birth, intrauterine growth retardation, Apgar score at 1 and 5 min, congenital abnormalities, and perinatal mortality. Results The mean patients’ age was 24.11 years, and the BMI was 23.4 kg/m 2 . The neonatal complications observed in patients with placenta previa included intrauterine growth restriction (26%), Apgar score less than 7 at 1 min (26%) and 5 min (12%), congenital malformations (6%), and perinatal death (8%). Conclusion The above results suggested that placenta previa can significantly negatively impact maternal and fetal health and increase the risk of adverse birth outcomes.
