This article examines S. Venkatesan’s historical novel, Veerayuga Nayagan Velpari, not merely as an epic of generosity but as a profound exploration of rationalist principles set against the backdrop of the Sangam era. While heroic narratives traditionallyprioritize divine belief, omens, and mysticism, Velpari deliberately sidelines these elements, positioning reason, scientific knowledge, and psychological strategy as the true foundations of power and righteousness. The analysis demonstrates the multifaceted nature of rationalism within the narrative: from the Parambu society’s ability to integrate refugees and heal their trauma using communal rituals as a functional psychological tool; to Pari’s strategic use of the geographical, botanical, and zoological knowledge of his forest home as a replacement for reliance on supernatural intervention. Furthermore, the novel establishes an ethical and economic rationalism through the creation of a classless, egalitarian society and a principled rejection of market&driven capitalism, articulated by the philosophy that “Commerce is rooted in profit; profit is inhuman. Ultimately, the study concludes that Velpari is an intellectual undertaking that establishes a blueprint for an alternative, progressive society, where knowledge, justice, and moral reasoning form the impenetrable defense against political and economic oppression. The novel transcends its historical setting to offer a powerful, rational framework relevant to contemporary social challenges.
