An Interface for Open-Ended Design in Housing Production: An Analysis of Yeşilköy Housing by the Context of Adaptability
Housing can be regarded as a field of production that directly reflects changes in individual life while serving as a significant indicator of broader social transformations. This study conceptualizes housing as an open-ended product within the framework of adaptability and examines it through the lens of individual–space interaction. Adaptability is addressed through the components of appropriation, transformability, and articulation, which encompass not only spatial flexibility but also the dynamics of individual–space relations and the transformation potentials arising from temporality. Within this framework, the Yeşilköy Housing Complex, constructed in the 1970s in parallel with universal architectural tendencies yet prioritizing the individual and everyday life, is analyzed in relation to these components. The research evaluates the spatial characteristics of the settlement and their transformation over time with respect to patterns of use. The study aims to identify spatial sub-categories that enhance adaptability potential, thereby contributing to both the reinterpretation of existing housing practices and the development of future architectural approaches that support cultural continuity.
