Case series on early amniotic membrane transplantation in individuals with systemic and ocular Stevens–Johnson syndrome
Abstract Stevens–Johnson syndrome (SJS) is an acute, polymorphic, inflammatory disease that affects the skin and mucous membranes. Ocular manifestations mainly involve the conjunctiva, but can later affect the cornea and lead to blindness. Amniotic membrane grafting helps reduce inflammation and scarring, promotes healing in ocular surface disorders, and decreases the risk of symblepharon formation. This case series aims to increase awareness and highlight the importance of prompt ophthalmological referral and treatment in SJS cases to prevent permanent visual loss or impairment. We present three cases where timely intervention resulted in favorable visual outcomes.
