Toward Resilient and Sustainable Energy Systems: Assessment of Networked Microgrids for Disaster-Prone Regions in Indonesia
The resilience performance of networked microgrids (NMGs) in disaster-prone areas, using a real-world testbed located in Lombok, Indonesia is explored in this paper. Given the increasing environmental pressures and energy security concerns in Indonesia, it is vital to improve the robustness and sustainability of decentralized energy infrastructures. We propose an optimization-based energy management framework to address supply interruptions in NMGs, particularly during grid failures and loss of inter-microgrid connectivity caused by natural disasters (NDs). The model evaluates system performance by measuring unserved energy under varying fault scenarios. Results highlight that while NMGs manage grid outages with 31.7 kWh of unserved load, full inter-MG disconnection results in a sharp increase to 366.3 kWh, emphasizing the critical role of microgrid interconnection in ensuring operational resilience.
