Efficient sorption and separation of radionuclides Cs and Eu using permutit resin, a synthetic sodium aluminosilicate
Abstract This study investigates the use of permutit resin, a synthetic sodium aluminum orthosilicate-based ion-exchange material, for the selective adsorption and separation of radionuclides from aqueous solutions. Focusing on long-lived fission products, cesium-137 and trivalent actinides, the sorption behavior of cesium(I) and europium(III) was examined using batch and column techniques with their analogs, 134 Cs and 152+154 Eu. The resin demonstrated high ion-exchange capacities (177.7 mg/g for Cs(I) and 189.6 mg/g for Eu(III) in batch experiments) and effective separation under acidic conditions. Sorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating chemisorption. The results confirm permutit resin’s potential as a robust and selective sorbent for radionuclide separation in nuclear waste treatment specially for separation of Cs(I) and Eu(III).
