Robustness Analysis of MPC-based Voltage Control in Distribution Grids Under Uncertainties

The increase in distributed energy resources presents new challenges for the operation of distribution grids. Maintaining grid stability, particularly voltage regulation, requires new control methods to address these challenges. A promising approach for voltage regulation in active distribution grids is Model Predictive Control (MPC). While MPC offers the flexibility and responsiveness needed to manage the dynamic and uncertain nature of active distribution networks, its robustness against uncertainties remains underexplored. This work proposes a centralized MPC formulation for voltage regulation in distribution grids, with a focus on analyzing its robustness against uncertainties such as measurement and forecast errors, as well as communication failures. Case studies conducted on a SimBench low-voltage (LV) grid demonstrated the method’s robustness to the aforementioned uncertainties. To further advance the assessment of robustness, additional studies are required, particularly those that test the limits of the control framework across a broader range of test cases.
