The geometry of complex time(v3)
We propose a framework in which physical time is described by a complex field T(x) = t(x) – i τ(x), where the real component t encodes the causal structure of general relativity and the imaginary component τ represents an internal temporal degree of freedom. The dynamics of τ, governed by the nonminimally coupled equation □τ – V′(τ) – ξ R τ = 0, modifies Einstein’s equations through an additional energy–momentum contribution and leads to a generalized Friedmann equation in which τ may act as a dynamical effective cosmological constant. On the quantum side, the evolution equation i ħ ∂ₜ ψ = Ĥ ψ introduces a geometric attenuation factor exp(–Ĥ τ / ħ) that provides a natural mechanism for decoherence. Numerical illustrations show that τ can decay over cosmological timescales, contribute nontrivially to the energy density and induce measurable quantum attenuation. Altogether, this complex-time framework offers a unified geometric perspective on relativistic and quantum aspects of temporal structure and opens new directions for cosmology, quantum theory and gravitational physics.
