A Comprehensive Review on the Evolution and Impact of Drug Trafficking in the Digital Age

Introduction: Online drug trafficking has become a significant and growing challenge in the illicit drug trade, particularly due to technological developments and the proliferation of the internet. This review examines the diverse landscape of online drug trafficking, focusing on the use of dark web marketplaces, social media platforms, and encrypted messaging services to distribute and sell illicit substances. Method: An Extensive literature search was conducted using review and research papers from PubMed, Elsevier, the INTERPOL website, and book chapters to gather relevant information. The analysis underscores the need for a comprehensive response involving international cooperation among governments, law enforcement agencies, and technology platforms to address the risks associated with online drug trafficking, while also utilizing online resources for prevention and awareness initiatives. Result and Discussion: This analysis aimed to contribute to an understanding of how the digital environment is reshaping drug markets and influencing patterns of drug consumption and trafficking on a global scale. Online drug trafficking has evolved significantly with the rise of darknet markets, which facilitate anonymous, cryptocurrency-based transactions for a wide range of illicit drugs, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cannabis, and synthetic psychedelics. These platforms enable global reach, connecting consumers and vendors across continents and often increasing drug availability in previously underserved regions. Although coordinated international operations, such as Operation RapTor, have resulted in arrests and the seizure of large quantities of narcotics, darknet markets continue to show resilience by quickly reemerging or migrating to new platforms. Conclusion: Online drug trafficking poses an increasing risk to global security and health, necessitating technology advancements, international collaboration, and stricter legislation. It is crucial to take a balanced approach that integrates education, prevention, and enforcement. Long-term social protection can be ensured by using digital technologies to prevent illicit trade, while promoting awareness and ensuring long-term societal protection.
