Fungal Nail Infection in Early Infancy: A Case of Subungual Candidal Onychomycosis
Onychomycosis, although rare in infants, can be caused by various pathogens, including dermatophyte fungi and yeasts. We report this unique case of onychomycosis in a 2-month-old infant admitted to the Hassan II University Hospital in Fez with a suspicion of Gaucher’s disease. Upon examination, skin abnormalities were observed, notably pachyonychia with subungual hyperkeratosis of the nail on the third finger of the right hand. Mycological examination confirmed the presence of Candida albicans . Onychomycosis in infants is rare and often associated with predisposing factors such as congenital malformations, immunodeficiency, or a history of fungal infections in the parents. In this case, the infant’s condition may have favored the infection by C. albicans , creating an environment conducive to fungal colonization. This case highlights the importance of thorough mycological evaluation in infants with congenital malformations and diseases. Early patient care is essential to prevent the potential complications.
