The policy of memory, commemoration, post-socialism? Remembering socialist modernisation in the Czech countryside

This study explores the culture of remembering local sites of socialist modernisation in the Czech countryside. The study is based on research in two locations. Examined are memories of the popularity of a community centre and the prosperity of a collective farm. These phenomena shape the locally relevant places of memory not only in their physical forms; they also become sources of active commemoration . The local connections are set in the context of the national policy of remembrance and the culture of memory of peripheral regions across post-socialist countries. The article explores the salience of locally relevant commemoration concerning society-wide development. Also, it raises the question of the possibility of relating these phenomena to the context of the changes in the dominant post-socialist memory framework in Central and Eastern Europe.
