The Acoustics of Bağlama: Directivity Patterns of Sound Radiation
There are various acoustic measurements to understand the physics of musical instruments. Among them, directivity, sound radiation, sound intensity, damping, finite element method, interferometry, frequency and impulse responses are the leading ones. Thanks to these measurements, important information about the acoustic structure of musical instruments is obtained. In this article, the directivity patterns of the acoustic radiation of the bağlama, a long-necked and string Turkish musical instrument, are presented for the first time. At the beginning of the research, a bağlama in the form of a resonator, which is widely used today, was produced. A solid model of this bağlama, which was taken as a reference, was created by 3D surface scanning process. In order to see the effect of changes in resonator form on sound radiation, four different additional resonators were modeled. The software used for numerical modeling and acoustic analysis are SolidWorks, HyperMesh and Msc.Actran. In the final step, the directional radiation properties of all bağlamas were analyzed and interpreted. According to the obtained directivity patterns, the global radiation patterns seen in bass sounds in reference bağlama changed from 466Hz. Directional radiation started from this frequency value. While directional radiation started around 466Hz in other bağlama models, the angular directivity patterns of each were different
