15 Case Series of 25 Patients Underwent Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy in a Resource Poor Setting, Challenges and Outcomes
Abstract Aim To evaluate the outcomes of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in a case series done in poor resource setting and to identify the challenges and outcomes. Method A prospective case series, including 25 patients, who underwent sleeve gastrectomy by a single surgeon from 1 Jan 2024 to 1 Jan 2025. All patient evaluated against fixed inclusion and exclusion criteria and followed up for at least 3 months. Preoperative modified weight reduction exercise regimen as per resource setting was adopted. The primary outcome was weight reduction and hospital stay while secondary outcome was complication, resource issues, challenges, patient compliance. Results Out of 25, 19 were male and 6 were females. Average age of 31.9 years (SD +/-0.9). Mortality 30 day of 0 percent. Average BMI was 33 and weight reduction achievement was 100 percent (P <0.001). Average hospital stay was around 2.7 days. Post op complications like seroma, port site bleeding, vomiting was observed in only 2 patients with no return to theatre in any patient. No case of post operative leak was identified. Preoperative weight reduction and exercise adherence was found out to be major challenge while cost and affordability remain on 3rd and 4th. Conclusions Our case series of 25 patients is unique because of its setting which was done in resource poor institute but with good outcomes. Modified exercise regimen was adopted with good results. We aim to share this with resource rich setting and to get insight on the challenges faced in our settings.
