Effect of Nd: YAG Laser Capsulotomy on Anterior Segment Eye Parameters using Shiempflug Imaging
Background: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common complication after cataract surgery, impairing visual acuity. Nd: YAG laser capsulotomy is the standard management, but its potential impact on anterior segment parameters and refraction remains a topic of clinical interest. Purpose: To evaluate the influences of Nd: YAG laser capsulotomy on refraction and anterior segment variables using Pentacam Scheimpflug imaging in pseudophakic patients with PCO. Methods: This interventional clinical research involved fifty eyes of fifty pseudophakic cases with significant PCO. Refraction (spherical equivalent), intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior chamber volume (ACV), mean keratometry (Km), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and anterior chamber angle (ACA) were assessed before and one month following Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy using a Scheimpflug imaging system. Results: Postoperatively, the mean spherical equivalent improved from -0.76±1.18 D to -0.43±0.78 D. IOP decreased slightly from 14.8±1.9 mmHg to 14.33±1.75 mmHg. Km, ACD, ACA, and CCT also showed minor reductions, while ACV slightly increased. Most changes were statistically insignificant, indicating minimal physiological disruption. Conclusion: Nd: YAG laser capsulotomy results in slight, clinically insignificant changes in anterior segment structure and refraction. The procedure maintains biometric stability, supporting its continued use as an effective and safe treatment for PCO.
