A Review of Research in the Field of Analysis of Thermal Parameters of Steel Strip and Rolls during Cold Rolling

An analysis of studies of thermal processes during cold rolling was conducted, with an emphasis on studying the temperature of cold-rolled strip in the deformation zone using various methods. It was found that the results vary somewhat. Some experts claim that the strip remains in a temperature range of 100–150°C during cold rolling, while others claim that the strip temperature during cold deformation can reach up to 250°C. A number of studies also examine changes in strip temperature indirectly through contact between its surface and the work roll barrel. Almost all studies link changes in strip temperature not only to changes in the temperature of the rolls and the cooling emulsions used, but also to process parameters such as the degree and rate of deformation, rolling speed, total reduction, and friction conditions in the deformation zone. Given the complexity of developing universal mathematical models due to the large number of assumptions and the use of numerous empirical parameters of heat transfer theory, as well as the difficulty of using direct and indirect methods for determining strip temperature during cold rolling, applied research conducted for specific rolling units, taking into account the specific product range, cooling system parameters, and technology employed, is promising. In this case, based on real-time data collection, using empirical data on a specific object and regression relationships, it is possible to create an engineering tool for monitoring and predicting strip temperature, which can also automatically adjust mill settings if the permissible level is exceeded.
