Integrating dental and medical care for cerebral palsy patients: A narrative review of considerations and strategies
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a prevalent motor disability that appears in childhood and is caused by abnormal brain development or damage. Symptoms include spasticity, poor coordination, and tremors, often accompanied by intellectual disabilities and sensory impairments. Early intervention and appropriate care can improve quality of life. Medical treatments include medications for spasticity, dystonia, and epilepsy, while other medical therapies enhance motor skills and communication and address muscle contractures and joint function. Oral manifestations, such as chronic periodontal disease, dental trauma, and malocclusion, in CP patients require specialized dental care. Preventive measures, behavioral management, and sedation techniques are essential for effective dental treatment. The article provides recommendations for the dental management of CP patients.
