An in vitro Study to Evaluate the Efficacy of a Novel Potassium Oxalate-Based Desensitizing Agent on Dentinal Tubule Occlusion
Background: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is a common, yet often under-reported condition marked by sharp pain from exposed dentin, which significantly affects the quality of life. Objective: This study evaluated the effect of a potassium oxalate liquid desensitizer versus a potassium nitrate-based toothpaste on dentinal tubule occlusion and calcium retention in acid-etched human dentin both before and after an in vitro erosion challenge. Methods: Sectioned dentin discs from extracted third molars were acid-etched with 6% citric acid. Samples were treated twice daily for 6 days with either potassium oxalate liquid desensitizer or potassium nitrate toothpaste. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis was used to assess tubule occlusion, calcium–sulfur content, and pre- and posterosion challenge results. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: The potassium oxalate liquid desensitizer achieved 85% tubule occlusion, enhanced calcium deposition by 213.9%, and retained 79% occlusion after erosion. It outperformed the potassium nitrate toothpaste in both tubule occlusion and mineral retention. Conclusion: Compared with the potassium nitrate toothpaste, the potassium oxalate liquid desensitizer demonstrated superior and sustained dentinal tubule occlusion. These findings suggest that a potassium oxalate-based liquid desensitizer, especially when combined with a desensitizing toothpaste, may represent a futuristic strategy for the optimal management of DH.
