Low dose aspirin as a prophylactic measure of preterm labour
Background: A past spontaneous preterm birth is the biggest risk factor for future ones, even when prophylactic interventions like progesterone are used. There is an urgent need for additional preventive measures. Objective: this study sought to compare the effectiveness of low-dose aspirin (LDA) versus a placebo in preventing subsequent spontaneous preterm births (PTB). Methodology: The Beni-Suef University Hospital's division of gynecology and obstetrics hosted this randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled experiment. 90 patients participated in this research. The participants were split into 2 groups: LDA group (45), which got small-dose aspirin 81 mg once daily, preferably in the evening, and the control group (45), which received a placebo once daily, preferably in the evening. The trial lasted somewhere between six and twelve months. Results: The main results of the study revealed that: Preterm labor (PTL) rates are statistically significantly lower in the Aspirin group than in the placebo group. With regard to information on maternal age, BMI, residence, socioeconomic status, and education, there are no appreciable differences between the groups. There is no appreciable difference between the groups regarding clinical data and risk factors, neonatal outcomes, comorbidities. There is no appreciable value between the groups regarding fetal loss, postpartum hemorrhage, small for gestational age and mode of delivery. The groups do not differ significantly in terms of maternal problems. Additionally, neither group has any maternal deaths. It was discovered that previous PTBs, PTBs in the family, and prior cerclage were all significant risk factors for PTL. Conclusion: We found that small-dose aspirin considerably lowers the preterm labor rates in this study.
