Cordia Genus: a Glimpse of Chemical Composition and Bioactivity
Genus Cordia L. (Boraginaceae), comprising over 300 accepted species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions, is renowned for its ecological and economic importance. Cordia L. genus is a medicinal plant species that plays a substantial role in the treatment of several disorders. This review investigates the phytochemical diversity, bioactivity, and cytotoxicity of Cordia species through the natural product constituents that have been revealed. Prior studies indicate that Cordia genus exhibits pharmacological properties such as antifungal, anticancer, antibacterial activities and other potent activities. The natural products pool of Cordia genus is very diverse. Former research emphasized that the fatty acid level and the concentrations of terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins and polyphenols were significantly elevated, while steroids, resins, glycosides, tannins, and gums were present in lesser amounts. Our findings reveal novel bioactive compounds and taxonomic revisions, highlighting the genus' potential in medical treatments. The multifaceted therapeutic profile of Cordia species, coupled with their rich phytochemical composition, positions them as valuable resources for developing novel therapeutic agents for various human ailments. As research in natural product-based drug discovery continues to evolve, Cordia species offer promising opportunities for the development of new pharmaceuticals with diverse therapeutic applications.
