UDL as a Framework for Equity in Technology-Enabled Higher Education: Designing Inclusive Online and Hybrid Learning Environments
This paper examines Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a framework for advancing equity in higher education. It explores the intersection of UDL and social justice, emphasizing how inclusive design practices can dismantle systemic barriers and support diverse learners in technology-enabled and online/hybrid learning environments. Drawing on scholarly literature and professional experience, the paper demonstrates how UDL principles—representation, engagement, and expression—inform course design to foster accessibility and inclusion. Practical examples, such as the Faculty Companion project, illustrate how UDL can guide educators in creating responsive and human-centered learning environments. Ultimately, this paper positions UDL as both a pedagogical approach and a catalyst for institutional change that promotes equitable educational practices in the digital age.
