Editorial

This editorial outlines the AHRC project, ‘Figurations of working-class subjects in UK theatre practice and policy’, from which this Special Issue on class and theatre emerged. It then summarizes the contents of the Special Issue before reflecting on some of the key issues that emerged from dialogues with artists, producers and policy-makers during the project. These included artists’ responses to Arts Council England’s mapping of class origins, changing priorities in arts funding applications and the complexities of being defined, or self-defining, as a ‘working-class artist’.
