Mobile-Bearing versus Fixed-Bearing Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Comparative Study

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) represents the most efficacious treatment by far in alleviating pain and improving functional capacity of individuals suffering from advanced osteoarthritis (OA). Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate and contrast the clinical and radiological outcomes of fixed- and mobile-bearing designs within the same TKA model. Patients and methods: This prospective randomized research was executed on 30 participants from 60 to 80 years old, both genders, suffering from pan compartmental knee OA and post-traumatic arthritis following unsuccessful conservative management for a minimum duration of six months. Participants were placed into two equal groups: Group A had mobile-bearing total knee replacement & group B that had fixed-bearing total knee replacement. Results: Mobile-bearing group showed slightly higher Knee Society Scores than the fixed-bearing group at all follow-up points, though without statistical significance, both groups demonstrated significant postoperative improvement. Satisfaction scores followed a similar pattern, with modestly higher values in fixed-bearing groups but significant improvement in both groups by 24 months. Expectations exhibited no significant among or within groups. Both groups exhibited significant postoperative enhancement in walking, standing, and in standard, advanced, and discretionary functional activities (P<0.001). Conclusions: The clinical and radiographic findings of both fixed-bearing and mobile-bearing total knee implants at two years follow-up were encouraging. However, it was found that there was nearly no subnational difference in validating the predominance of the mobile-bearing total knee implant over the fixed-bearing total knee implant.
