Overview of Middle Turbinate Stabilization during Endoscopic Sinus Surgery in Chronic Rhinosinusitis Patients
Background: Around the world, chronic rhinosinusitis [CRS] is a common health issue that might necessitate surgery if conservative treatment is ineffective. One typical minimally invasive surgical technique for managing CRS is functional endoscopic sinus surgery [FESS]. But, lateral displacement of the middle turbinate with adhesion to the lateral nasal wall is a frequent complication following endoscopic sinus surgery. This issue can lead to obstruction of the osteomeatal complex and compromise the success of the initial procedure. To preserve effective ventilation and drainage at the level of the middle meatus, medialization of the middle turbinate is preferred over turbinate resection. There are many techniques for turbinate stabilization, such as creating controlled synechiae between the middle turbinate and nasal septum [Bolgerization], or securing the turbinate to the septum using absorbable sutures such as Vicryl [Conchopexy]. In overall Middle turbinate stabilization is a highly effective intervention in endoscopic sinus surgery [ESS] for CRS patients, improving both functional and symptom-related outcomes.
