Natural cannabinoids effects on glutamatergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission in a transgenic model of Alzheimer's disease
Our results reveal that the combination of THC and CBD modulates glutamatergic activity in the hippocampus at early stages of the AD process and that, likely related to this, reduces dopaminergic alterations in limbic areas at advanced stages. Thus, these natural cannabinoids may alleviate both cognitive and non-cognitive symptoms occurring in AD, supporting their clinical development as a pleiotropic therapeutic alternative for this neurodegenerative disease.
