Six new species and one new country record of ants of the myrmicine genus Vombisidris Bolton, 1991 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from the Philippines, with a new global key to species
Six new species of the myrmicine ant genus Vombisidris Bolton, 1991 are described from the Philippines:deniseae sp. n. from Kidapawan, Northern Cotabato Province, Mindanao Island; mangautol sp. n. fromMalaybalay, Bukidnon Province, Mindanao Island; leonardcoi sp. n. and thompsoni sp. n. from Palanan, IsabelaProvince, Luzon Island; sabineschoppea sp. n., and starri sp. n. from Roxas, Palawan Island. In addition,Vombisidris harpeza Bolton, 1991 is newly recorded, also from Roxas, Palawan Island. Collection data for fiveof these species’ records (harpeza, leonardcoi sp. n., sabineschoppea sp. n., starri sp. n., and thompsoni sp. n.)together with observations of freya General, 2020, suggest that Vombisidris are nocturnal arboreal ants. Thus, itseems possible to find more species of this currently rare genus by simply sampling for them at night. A newglobal key the 26 species of Vombisidris, based on the worker caste, is presented.
