Aspiring to become gay fathers: Taiwanese gay men’s reproductive orientations towards ‘repropaths’

This article draws on Taiwanese gay fathers’ transnational reproductive experiences to conceptualise the ‘reproductive path (repropath)’ towards family-making. The data came from in-depth interviews with 53 (intended) gay fathers and participant observation. Building upon ‘queer orientation’ to reflect on the conflicting queerness and reproductive future, I propose the concept of ‘repropath’ that derives from the aspirations for gay fatherhood and evolves into individual/collective pathways of accessing cross-border assisted reproduction and temporal/geographical paths towards reproductive destinations and queer reproductive future. Conclusively, this article highlights the ways in which queer individuals’ reproductive motivations and decisions are both embedded in and (re)shaping homo-/hetero-normativity.
