Breaking the Field-Particle Loop: Toward a Helical Ontology for Physics
Abstract Contemporary physics rests upon a foundation of quantum fields whose ontological status remains fundamentally circular: fields are defined by the particles they produce, while particles are defined as excitations of these fields. This tautological structure represents an explanatory loop that blocks deeper understanding of physical reality. Drawing inspiration from historical breakthroughs where circular models were replaced by generative ones—epicycles yielding to elliptical orbits, caloric fluid to kinetic theory, continuous ether to quanta—this paper diagnoses our current moment as analogous to the late 19th century: superficially complete yet fundamentally strained. We propose the Primitive Ontological Substrate (POS) as a necessary non-circular foundation, a third ontological category beyond the current mass-energy duality. From this substrate, mass emerges as the primary manifestation under Special Manifestation Condition Zero (SMCo), representing localized persistence. Subsequent SMCs enable charge, gauge symmetries, and forces in a helical progression of ontological layers. Crucially, we defend this approach against anticipated critiques by demonstrating that all fundamental theories require unexplained primitives, and that the choice is not between known and unknown, but between circular unknowns (fields defined by their excitations) and generative unknowns (substrate enabling non-tautological emergence). This framework does not alter the mathematical predictions of Quantum Field Theory or General Relativity but provides a coherent ontological interpretation that resolves conceptual paradoxes, explains why mass appears ontologically prior within the manifestation hierarchy proposed here, even when mathematically massless gauge fields are permitted, and suggests empirical regimes where the conditional nature of manifestations might become apparent. We conclude that physics stands at the threshold of another paradigm shift, and that embracing helical rather than circular ontologies represents the necessary next step in our understanding of reality.
