Transboundary Ecotourism along the Silk Road
This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the potentials, challenges, and strategic pathways for sustainable development of transboundary ecotourism along the historic Silk Road. Given the growing role of ecotourism as a tool for environmental conservation and regional cooperation, this research employs a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative), incorporating data collected through expert surveys, semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders, and document analysis of previous studies and relevant reports. The findings indicate that the Silk Road corridor possesses significant ecological and cultural assets for the advancement of transboundary ecotourism. However, issues such as policy misalignments between neighboring countries, inadequate sustainable infrastructure, ecological vulnerability to climate change, and limited community engagement pose considerable obstacles to unlocking this potential. The results further emphasize that the success of transboundary ecotourism initiatives relies on effective collaboration among governments, international organizations, the private sector, and local communities. Based on the integration of qualitative and quantitative insights, a conceptual model comprising eight key dimensions is proposed: participatory governance, integrated natural resource management, sustainable infrastructure development, community involvement, technological innovation, socio-cultural enhancement, joint marketing and branding, and robust monitoring and evaluation systems. This model may serve as a policy-oriented framework applicable to other border regions with comparable natural and cultural heritage.
