Retinal fairy lights: Benign flecked retina multimodal imaging
Benign familial flecked retina is characterized by widespread bilateral yellow-white fleck-like lesions that extend to the extreme periphery of the retina except the foveal area. A 14 year old girl who came for routine eye check up was evaluated. The anterior segment examination showed normal findings. Fundus examination showed bilateral symmetrical diffuse yellow-white flecks, more concentrated in the mid-periphery, sparing macula, with no evidence of pigment clumping or pigment alteration. Both parents and only sibling of proband were examined and did not reveal any abnormality. Here we describe multimodal imaging features of benign flecked retina that helps in accurate diagnosis and thus in prognostication as compared to other disorders which may have an associated visual impairment. Additionally, we have documented Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) which is a newer, non invasive imaging modality that enables depth resolved images of the retinal and choroidal microvasculature.
