A Case of Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis Resolved With Adjuvant Human Papillomavirus Vaccination
Surgical resection remains the gold standard for treating recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), focused on preserving voice quality and maintaining the airway. However, the high rate of recurrence highlights the need for effective adjunctive therapies, with emerging studies suggesting that human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination may reduce the frequency of required surgeries. We report the case of a 45-year-old male with frequently recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis who had previously undergone two CO2 laser surgeries. The patient was treated with laryngeal microsurgery using a KTP laser, followed by the administration of adjuvant HPV vaccination. Despite the observation of an initial recurrence 1 month post-operation, all new lesions showed complete regression by the 3-month follow-up. This case suggests that post-surgical HPV vaccination may function as a therapeutic agent, offering a beneficial management strategy for RRP patients presenting with aggressive or frequent recurrence.
