Determinants of blockchain adoption for supply chain tracking in Malaysia’s medical device industry
Purpose This paper aims to examine the factors that influence employees’ intention to adopt blockchain-based supply chain tracking in Malaysia’s medical device industry, with a focus on the moderating role of technology readiness (TR). By identifying these factors, the research enhances the understanding of blockchain-adoption in this sector. Design/methodology/approach The study formulates hypotheses based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and TR framework. Data was gathered from 351 employees of a Malaysian medical device company and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings Perceived usefulness and optimism significantly impact employees’ intention to use blockchain-based supply chain tracking. However, TR dimensions did not show a significant moderating effect on the relationship between TAM variables and intention. Research limitations/implications The study is based on self-reported survey responses and is limited to employees within Malaysia’s medical device industry. Future research can enhance validity by incorporating multiple data sources and applying the model in different settings. Practical implications To encourage blockchain adoption, managers should emphasize perceived usefulness and optimism when introducing tracking systems. Tailored strategies and support mechanisms can facilitate a smoother transition. Originality/value This study provides insights into the adoption of blockchain-technology in the medical device industry, offering practical guidance for managers and decision-makers on improving supply chain management through technology integration. While similar studies exist in other sectors, this research is among the first to explore blockchain adoption in Malaysia’s medical device industry a highly regulated and underexplored context. The integration of TAM and TR frameworks, combined with moderation analysis, offers a novel perspective on employee-level adoption behavior in a healthcare supply chain setting within an emerging economy.
