Integrating Technological and Behavioral Perspectives in the Adoption of China's Digital Currency (e-CNY): A Systematic Literature Review
This study contributes to both academic theory and policy by offering an integrative framework that connects technological and behavioral perspectives, thereby enhancing understanding of how trust, literacy, and institutional credibility influence public acceptance of CBDCs. This study conducts a systematic literature review on the adoption of China’s central bank digital currency (e-CNY). Drawing on 62 studies published between 2014 and 2025; it integrates the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) with behavioral and cognitive perspectives to provide a comprehensive understanding of user adoption. The review identifies three main determinants: technological adaptability, behavioral and cognitive factors, and contextual moderators. Findings highlight that institutional trust, perceived risk, and government communication play crucial roles in shaping users’ behavioral intentions. The study contributes to the growing literature on digital currency adoption by bridging technological and behavioral approaches and offering insights for future CBDC policy design.
