Acute pectoralis major tendon tear repair with semitendinosus augmentation: case series
Pectoralis major (PM) tendon tear is an uncommon injury, mostly affecting active males between the 3 rd and 4 th decades of life, which has increased in the last years given the increasing number of athletes in different modalities. 12,14Usually it results from an excessive eccentric contraction of the muscle when the shoulder is in external rotation and extension 12,14 particularly during bench press 1,6 , wrestling, skiing, and other sporting activities. 3,9 decision of which type of technique to perform is based on the surgeon's preference. In cases where retraction precludes the tendon stump from reaching the original insertion site or when this is accomplished through great tension, augmentation with a graft is the best option. 4,5 purpose of this study is to present a series of cases using the technique for PM repair with suture anchors and reinforced with semitendinosus (ST) autograft described by Garofo et al 8 , applied to high demanding athletes with the necessity to perform sports in a competitive level. MethodsFrom September 2013 to June 2018, seven consecutive patients with PM tears were evaluated in our clinic. In addition, we retrospectively reviewed the surgical technique, postoperative therapy protocols, and clinical outcomes of patients who had a PM tear and underwent surgical repair with suture anchors and ST autograft. The surgical technique was published and was the same applied to all seven cases.A scheme
