Relieving the heavy metal particulate emission by applying a novel design of brake dust collection system in a sporty scooter with ABS

• A novel design of the brake dust collection system in a motorcycle is constructed. • An experiment was conducted using a powerful magnet, an exhaust fan, and a HEPA filter. • Operating a quicker exhaust fan significantly decreases dust concentration more effectively. • Installing powerful magnetic parts effective in capturing ferromagnetic particles. • The dust collectors can effectively capture 0.5 and 5.0 µm particles generated during braking. As the number of motorcycles continues to increase, the pollutants from the vehicle's brake mechanisms also increase, since when the rider brakes, the wear of the brake pads and discs releases dust particles. The dust emission from the brake wear release process may have multiple environmental and health impacts under prolonged exposure. Utilizing a powerful magnet, an exhaust fan, and a HEPA filter, an innovative design for the brake dust collection system was experimented with. A comprehensive experimental scheme was designed to evaluate the performance of the motorcycle brake dust-collecting system in terms of dust absorption under actual driving conditions. The results indicate that the system can collect 26% of 0.5 µm and 69% of 5.0 µm dust particles more effectively than the base system (without any filtration components), confirming the importance of dust collectors in capturing the environmental impact of dust generated during braking. It is proving that powerful magnetic parts are more effective in capturing ferromagnetic particles. Additionally, operating an exhaust fan in conjunction with the other filtration components (magnet and HEPA filter) significantly enhances dust collection performance. A higher exhaust fan speed produces a more effective filtering process (eliminating 27% of 0.5 µm particles and 66% of 5.0 µm particles trapped in a dust collector compared to the device with magnet, HEPA filter and no exhaust fan). Therefore, this innovative design could offer valuable insights into practical dust-collection applications, providing a positive impact on environmental benefits, especially in reducing brake-generated fine dust.
