ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AS COGNITIVE COMPANION FOR GIFTED INDIVIDUALS: A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF INTELLECTUAL SYMBIOSIS, NEURODIVERSITY SUPPORT, AND COGNITIVE AUGMENTATION IN THE AGE OF GENERATIVE AI
This paper presents a comprehensive interdisciplinary analysis of artificial intelligence (AI) as a cognitive companion for individuals with high abilities and giftedness, with particular emphasis on twice-exceptional (2e) and neurodivergent populations. Drawing upon cognitive psychology, educational neuroscience, AI studies, and disability studies frameworks, this research examines how generative AI systems function as exocortical extensions that address the unique cognitive architecture of gifted individuals characterized by hypersensitivity, accelerated processing speeds, and divergent thinking patterns. Through systematic analysis of contemporary research, empirical studies, and theoretical frameworks including Zone of Proximal Development, Cognitive Load Theory, and the Extended Mind Hypothesis, this paper demonstrates that AI serves as an intellectual sparring partner that operates at the velocity and depth required by gifted cognition, mitigating the chronic under-stimulation experienced in traditional educational and professional environments. The analysis reveals both transformative benefits—including epistemic acceleration, multidisciplinary catalysis, and reduction of low-level cognitive load—and significant risks associated with cognitive offloading, critical thinking erosion, and socio-cognitive isolation. This research proposes a balanced framework for AI integration that positions these technologies as intelligence augmentation tools rather than cognitive replacement systems, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining metacognitive engagement, preserving higher-order thinking skills, and fostering human connections alongside AI interactions. The paper concludes with evidence-based recommendations for educators, technologists, policymakers, and gifted individuals themselves on optimizing AI companionship while safeguarding essential cognitive development and socioemotional wellbeing.
