Collaborative Homeostasis: A Cross-Domain Pattern of Stress-Induced Dysregulation in Managed Biological Systems

cross wildlife conservation, agriculture, animal welfare, and human health, similar failure patterns are described using different terminologies and policy lenses. This paper proposes that these domains are observing the same underlying phenomenon: chronic ecological mismatch producing sustained stress, leading to loss of homeostatic regulation and subsequent disease, collapse, or compensatory control. Rather than domain-specific pathologies, these outcomes reflect a systems-level failure mode common to biological organisms under human management. Interventions frequently prioritise tolerance for dysregulation—through chemical inputs, genetic selection, behavioural control, or medical management—over restoration of the environmental conditions required for self-regulation. This paper introduces Collaborative Homeostasis as a unifying explanatory grammar to support cross-domain recognition and comparative analysis while preserving disciplinary independence.

Abstract

cross wildlife conservation, agriculture, animal welfare, and human health, similar failure patterns are described using different terminologies and policy lenses.
