Music Reviews
Abstract: This article reviews three recent contributions to the contemporary art song and chamber opera repertoire. Jodi Goble’s The Miller’s Daughter: A New World Schubertiade (2025) reinterprets Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin from the perspective of the Miller’s Daughter, offering a flexible work adaptable for recital or staged performance. A new edition of Florence Price’s Six Songs on Poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar , edited by John Michael Cooper and published by ClarNan Editions (Classical Vocal Reprints), furthers the ongoing revival of Price’s music while providing singers with carefully prepared scores and valuable contextual insights. Finally, Mark Abel’s As the World Turns (2025) presents a song cycle for mezzo-soprano and piano that blends classical, jazz, and rock idioms in a narrative exploring the arc of a love relationship. Together, these works exemplify the richness and diversity of American vocal music in the twenty-first century.
