The Dynamics of the Moldovan Citizens’ Perceptions of EU Accession: A Multidimensional Approach

The geopolitical tensions at the eastern border of the European Union highlight the strategic role of cultural diplomacy, alongside propaganda and disinformation, in shaping regional security and public opinion. The cultural diplomacy, through programmes such as Erasmus+ and initiatives like MoldArte, strengthens ties with partner states, promotes European values, and fosters positive perceptions of EU integration, though its reach remains limited in rural areas and among less engaged populations. Concurrently, Russian propaganda and disinformation continue to influence the Moldovan public via traditional media, social networks, and targeted manipulation, undermining trust in democratic institutions and European integration. In this context, the Republic of Moldova, like other Eastern neighbours (e.g., Ukraine and Georgia), sees the EU accession as a means to assert its sovereignty and safeguard its national identity. This study analyses the Moldovan citizens’ attitudes towards EU membership, by taking into account the demographic and social factors, and highlights the importance of coordinated cultural, informational, and policy measures to strengthen support for integration amid a complex and evolving geopolitical environment.
