Abstract: The offensive of August 20, 1955, in northern Constantine, was a decisive step for Zighoud Youcef in reviving the insurrection. While reinforcing the revolutionary momentum, the offensive demonstrated the FLN's ability to mobilize the masses and assert itself as the sole representative force of the Algerian people. According to its French and/or Algerian detractors, the violence and human losses resulting from this offensive tarnished the FLN's image in French and international public opinion. This article, while emphasizing the repression, highlights the behavior of several protagonists from both communities who found themselves in direct confrontation. In contrast to the images imposed by the media, which focused on violence, this account emphasizes those who, sometimes at the risk of their lives and at a time when violence was becoming widespread, made the difficult choice of lucidity and discernment.
