Résumés: Five visual archives from the 1950s display Tuareg figures and, out of focus, the blurred image of a French military kepi. Examining the context in which these photographs were taken in the interconfederal Tuareg region of the Tamesna, this article explores the complexity of nomadic territorial organization and land use. While Tuareg mobility between mountain and plain transforms the desert into a living and nourishing space, it collides with the fragmented cartography imposed by the French colonial administration. Within this framework, inhabiting the Sahara in the Tuareg way–the unthought-of side of the colonial myth of an empty desert to be valorized–becomes illegal. This sedentary and conquering imagery is perpetuated by postcolonial state models, which criminalize nomadism and the (now transborder) world produced and inhabited by the Tuareg.
