Urban Street Patterns: A DepthMapX & GIS-based Study of Shyam Bazar and Bidhannagar, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
This study has attempted to identify the various physical aspects of urban street patterns in the Shyambazar neighborhood, including types of urban street patterns, internal and external street connectivity, and ancient and modern street patterns, along with traffic flow analysis. The methodology involves participant observation, secondary data collection from past research, and preparation of different maps, including Link to Node Ratio (LNR), external connectivity using entry and exit points, intersection density based on dead ends and intersections, and an overall interaction map through DepthMapX analysis. Prior research lacked a single, comprehensive source on street types. The purpose of this study is to close that gap. It also looks at Shyambazar's urban street pattern, which hasn't gotten much attention in past research. This study identifies nine to ten basic varieties of urban street patterns: hexagonal, semicircular, warped parallel, loops and lollipops, irregular, cul-de-sacs or stem or T-type, curvilinear, radial or star, and gridiron. The Shyambazar neighborhood has medium and high internal and external connectivity, respectively. DepthMapX analysis reveals that Jitendra Mohan and Girish Avenue have the highest street connectivity. The intersection density is excellent. Traffic flow analysis shows a clear difference in vehicle numbers between working and non-working days. Thus, it can be concluded that by integrating water transport with smart ferry terminals, making pedestrian bridges over canals, fixing dead ends, strengthening internal loops, and developing those regions first that have better connectivity,a planner can develop this region in a better way.
