Peer review Probing the Superfluid to Mott Insulator Transition at the Single Atom Level Waseem Bakr Princeton
In this technical report we provide a variational-consistency assessment of the manuscript “Probing the Superfluid to Mott Insulator Transition at the Single Atom Level”. Although the experimental platform developed by Waseem Bakr and collaborators achieves high-resolution parity imaging in optical lattices, the interpretation of the data is not supported by the measurement protocol. The detection scheme measures parity rather than occupation, introduces strong measurement backaction, and disrupts the underlying many-body state. Claims regarding temperature, entropy, thermalization, and microscopic number statistics cannot be derived from parity-resolved observables and lack a quantitative theoretical framework. Using the Universal Psi Equation as a closed variational formalism, we show why thermometry, entropy estimation, defect analysis, and adiabatic timescale extraction require a generative functional description that incorporates parity projection and backaction at the level of the extremal functional. The report concludes that the manuscript contains several conceptual inconsistencies and cannot support its main claims without a full reformulation.
