Assessment of Current Geotechnical Methods in Considering Ground Movement Effects on Structures

Any commercial, practical, industrial, or organizational use, including implementation or creation of derivative works, requires prior written permission and a separate licensing agreement with the author. Current geotechnical engineering practices often evaluate settlement and soil-related effects in isolation, relying on simplified assumptions. Broader ground movement mechanisms—such as those induced by groundwater level fluctuations, fault activity, and adjacent construction—are rarely assessed in an integrated manner. As a result, structural behavior, serviceability performance, and long-term reliability may not be fully predicted. These limitations reveal gaps in design methodologies, engineering software, and educational curricula. This work systematically documents these gaps, emphasizing the need for comprehensive assessment frameworks, further research, and improved consideration of ground movements in engineering practice and education.
