Fundamentals of ATE Model: A Unified Variational Framework for Quantum Dynamics, Information and Gravity

This work introduces the Action–Theta–Entropy (ATE) framework, a unified variational field theory that incorporates quantum dynamics, irreversible information production, and gravitation within a single, dimensionally closed and Lorentz-covariant formulation. At its core, ATE is defined by a variational principle governing open physical systems, in which the dynamics arise from a constrained optimization between two competing quantities: • the cost of making distinctions (action / separation cost), and • the entropy produced by those distinctions. This balance is not imposed phenomenologically, but emerges as a Nash–Gibbs equilibrium between energetic cost and entropic gain. Formally, the theory is governed by the action functional S=∫𝑑4𝑥√(−𝑔)(ℒ𝒟 +ℒ𝛩 −𝛩𝜏𝑐𝛻𝜇𝐽𝑠𝜇) where 𝒟(x) is the distinction density field, Θ(x) is a dynamical entropic field, 𝐽𝑠𝜇 is the entropy current, and 𝜏𝑐 is the correlation time associated with irreversible distinction processes. The entropic coupling term ensures that entropy production enters the action locally, dynamically, and with exact dimensional closure. The resulting dynamics realize a variational Nash–Gibbs balance: configurations that reduce distinction cost while increasing entropy production are dynamically selected, whereas entropy-decreasing histories are rendered unstable by the structure of the action itself. Theta-Field Bifurcation and Unification A central element of the framework is the Theta field, Θ(x), which acts as the energetic conjugate to entropy production. While introduced as a single relativistic scalar field, Θ exhibits a scale-dependent bifurcation in its physical role: • in microscopic and laboratory regimes, it mediates decoherence, measurement backreaction, and the emergence of classical outcomes; • in macroscopic and cosmological regimes, it contributes coherently to gravitational dynamics through its stress–energy and entropic backreaction. This bifurcation is not imposed by hand but arises dynamically through renormalization-group flow and environmental dependence. In this sense, ATE constitutes a unifying field model, in which quantum dynamics, thermodynamics, and gravity are not separate sectors but different regimes of a single underlying theory. Modified Einstein Equations and New Gravitational Tensors Variation of the full action with respect to the spacetime metric yields generalized Einstein field equations of the form G𝜇𝜈 = 8𝜋𝐺(𝑇𝜇𝜈(𝒟) +𝑇𝜇𝜈(𝛩) + 𝑇𝜇𝜈(𝑒𝑛𝑡)) where: • 𝑇𝜇𝜈(𝒟) is the stress–energy tensor of the distinction field, • 𝑇𝜇𝜈(𝛩) is the standard stress–energy tensor of the dynamical entropic scalar field, • 𝑇𝜇𝜈(𝑒𝑛𝑡) is a genuinely new tensor arising from irreversible entropy production, 𝑇𝜇𝜈(𝑒𝑛𝑡) = −𝜏𝑐[𝑔𝜇𝜈𝛩𝛻𝛼𝐽𝑠𝛼 − 𝛩𝛻(𝜇𝐽{𝑠,𝜈)}]. These additional contributions imply that entropy production gravitates on the same footing as energy and momentum. Crucially, the entropic tensor vanishes identically in equilibrium or closed-system limits, distinguishing it sharply from a cosmological constant. This structure provides new dynamical mechanisms relevant to: • dark energy and dark matter phenomenology, • black hole thermodynamics and entropy balance, • the information content of spacetime, • cosmological irreversibility and structure formation. ATE does not merely reinterpret these problems, but introduces new field-theoretic degrees of freedom capable of addressing them within a single variational framework. The standard Einstein matter stress–energy tensor is recovered explicitly as the contribution of the distinction field 𝒟. The additional tensors represent genuinely new gravitational sources associated with entropy production and entropic backreaction, not a replacement of conventional matter. Quantum Sector: Deterministic Dynamics and Emergent Probability On the quantum side, ATE resolves the observer, measurement, and decoherence problems without introducing stochastic collapse postulates or observer-dependent axioms. The fundamental field equations are fully deterministic. Apparent randomness and probabilistic outcomes arise only at the level of effective descriptions seen by observers, as a consequence of entropy optimization and entropic backreaction. In the nonrelativistic limit, the distinction field admits the representation 𝒟 = |ψ|², and the effective dynamics reduce to a Schrödinger equation with an entropy-driven decoherence term. The Born rule emerges as the unique entropy-stable fixed point of the open-system evolution, not as an independent postulate. From this perspective, quantum probability reflects epistemic coarse-graining of an underlying deterministic field dynamics, governed by the same variational principle that controls gravity and thermodynamics. Scope and Outlook The Action–Theta–Entropy framework represents a new category of quantum field theory: a theory of intrinsically open systems in which information production, irreversibility, and observation are fundamental physical processes. The present work establishes the mathematical consistency, dimensional closure, and fieldtheoretic legitimacy of the framework. Its broader implications—for quantum foundations, gravitational physics, cosmology, and black hole thermodynamics—define a rich and open research program with significant unifying potential.
